Thursday Jul 27, 2023
Thursday Jul 27, 2023
Are you self-aware? It’s an interesting question, and not as obvious as one might think. Based on polls and research, a great majority of people believe they are self-aware. But further studies, such as those by The Eurich Group who’ve extensively researched this aspect of human psychology, found that the criteria of self-awareness was met by only 10-15% of all people. Asking the right questions can help lead us to a deeper sense of awareness.

Anxiety can be very complex. But in part, one could describe our anxiety as a fear of our imaginations. Or, us being afraid of what might happen, or what could be. Challenging what our imagination tells us can be done by bringing our mind into a present state. The practice of harnessing our imagination, not forecasting all the possible negative outcomes can free us from a lot of anxiety. This podcast just voices this issue, and offers a few mental shifts to introduce to your thought-life.

Thursday Jul 13, 2023
Thursday Jul 13, 2023
Ego is a contentious word, if not understood. To many, having an ego carries negative meaning. But it isn’t a negative thing to have an “ego” – in fact, it’s necessary and inescapable; we all have an ego. We say “I” from our ego – which is our self-recognition that we occupy a unique and distinct voice. Finding self-awareness and constructively working on improving your thought-life is a wonderful opportunity.

Remember, achieving a goal, big or small, isn't a big leap. It is a series of small steps. Like walking to a destination, the journey is not a single action. You’ll get there through many footsteps, and likely, have to adjust your direction several times to move around obstacles.
This is a reminder to keep a realistic perspective when you set goals. Break down days and tasks into single steps. The elephant won't get eaten in a single bite.

Awaken to Yourself. All Else is a Dream.
Thursday Jun 22, 2023
Thursday Jun 22, 2023
To exist in a state of dreaming, always outside of our mindful, present self, removes us from focus and action. Many of us live with our mind set on things around and outside of ourselves. People, places, what-ifs, if-onlys, and what-could-have-beens. We worry, imagine and dream of things out of our hands. Awakening to ourselves is where action can occur.

Through observation, the artist develops an ability to draw accurately. So does the insightful thinker, whose mind is always observing for accuracy and clarity.
Bias or preconception is sabotage. To capture the likeness of something is to focus only on what is – not on anything imagined or preconceived. Such is the observant mind.

About James Rozak
& Downtempo Life
I am an professional designer, illustrator and creative - with an interesting backstory. Most people would know me by my career - a capable and creative artist in my craft. Few people would know that I was raised in-and-around a cult, in which I would eventually become a pastor/minister.
Through a sense of awareness and reckoning of what I was observing, I experienced an enormous shift of perspective. It lead me to escape the church to quietly start a 'new life' - which forced me to wrestle with all the consequential damage, grief and loss (in particular, a complete loss of identity).
Learning to push outward, find confidence, understand suppressed personality, including my deep introversion has been my journey. All while trying to rebuild my sense of self, to build a meaningful career, and raise a family.
Downtempo Life is an expression of my experience on living a meaningful, intentional, reflective, creative life - and how living from a place of sensible calm.
Themes include: stoicism, intentional & slow living, creativity, fitness and wellness.
